In November of 2026, Irma Freeman Center for Imagination will be presenting a special project organized by artist Tom Sarver. Out of Body is a show of four Pittsburgh artists who approach the title theme from different directions. Maritza Mosquera creates visceral images that allude to one’s inner and outer connection to living, both physically and spiritually. Sarah Zeffiro creates large-scale abstract paintings that push the physicality of art making with the joy and exuberance of mark and symbol. Tom Sarver delves deep into the mind to render images of Pittsburgh arts experiences in specific time and place. David Montano’s conceptual approach often begins with the finding of a cherished artifact of the past, then responding with a work that contemplates the life of the original owner.

Out of Body has roots in the recent publication, Pittsburgh’s Avant-Garde: 60 Years Inside the Underground Art Scene, by Sheila Ali, which featured work by Sarver and Zeffiro. It continues the avant-garde spirit of that project and brings new voices, Montano and Mosquera, into the conversation. A tribute to Sheila Ali, longtime curator and director of programs at the Irma Freeman Center of Imagination, will be part of the exhibition.

The exhibition opens Friday, November 6th, 6PM - 9PM, during Unblurred, First Fridays on Penn Avenue.

SPECIAL DAYTIME EVENT!

Long, Long, Art Party

In the spirit of the exhibition, a free, family-friendly community event will be held on Saturday, November 14th from 11am to 3pm. The exhibition artists will be on hand to work collaboratively with guests to create art in the gallery. Art supplies and refreshments will be provided. Feel free to bring your own found objects to transform.
